AIR SPADING

and Root Pruning

When a tree is starting to decline or surrounded by construction, air spading and/or root pruning may be deemed necessary. Contact a STS consultant to look into your trees specific needs and determine what may be the best call to help your struggling tree.

Air spading uses a high-pressure air gun to remove the top several inches of root soil with out disturbing the roots. We then replace that soil with a 50/50 mix of loam soil and organic matter.

    • Air spading is a safe and effective way to break up compacted soil by using compressed air.

  • HOW DOES AIR SPADING WORK?

    • When air spading, the worker will use compressed air to blow the compacted dirt away from the tree’s roots for a number of reasons.​

  • WHEN IS AIR SPADING ROOTS NECESSARY?

    • Air spading can be used to:​

      • Break up compacted soil that has been preventing nutrients and water to flow to the roots​

      • Check for root rot beneath the soil

      • Assess and correct girdling roots

      • Perform a root collar excavation
